Why Are Americans So Overweight?
Well my take on this is the fact that never before has food been so accessible. Back when we lived a more rural life. Food was scarce. Meals were hard to put together and took a ton of work. So people ate less often.
You had your 3 meals of the day and that was pretty much your food intake. There was no snacking all night in front of the tv every single night.
No one had a fully stocked refrigerator or cupboards full of high calorie, high fat convenience foods and snacks.
Today FOOD IS EASY!
Imagine you are sitting at home on the couch in the evening. You had a large dinner just a couple of hours ago. Your food requirements to keep yourself alive and well is taken care of.
You are most likely relaxing in front of the TV or reading. You might be visiting with the family or talking to someone on the phone. Suddenly, you will start to feel a little hungry.
You might get an urge to eat something. Something small but oooh sooo good. You can practically taste it already. It might be sweets or something salty.
Hey we all get this feeling. Do you need to eat more?? No. Not in the slightest.

In the past when these feelings came over people they didn’t have easy food like we do today. They would have had to go scrounging around for something.
Maybe even have to go all the way to the store 5 miles away. That is a lot harder then walking ten feet to the refrigerator or cupboard.
Also the food they had was a lot healthier. A lot more fruits and vegetables. Hardly any chemical preservatives and artificial flavors and colors. So where they might have made popcorn, you might have ice cream or cheesecake. Can you say Carb Overload before Bed?
In the past people were worked into exhaustion. They were so busy they didn’t have time to sit around and over eat. Over-Eat!
Today we have a lot more spare time. A lot more sitting around. This creates boredom in the body and mind. What does your mind drift too when you are bored? The great feelings you get about food and eating. Food is EASY and it feels great.
Why do you think they call them “TREATS” ??
Here is what I think is the cause of today’s overeating in America…
There were no food commercials! This is a killer. Can you think of a worse thing to do to the 40% of Americans who are already overweight?? Stop for a minute and think about that.
This is just creating more overweight people daily. Take a look at TV advertising tonight. Every 15 minutes there is a juicy Fast Food advertisement. Created to make you desire to eat.
You can be reading a book with the TV on in the background. Maybe the kids or your spouse is watching TV. You are into your book but your mind is still taking everything in. You have no desire to eat. You are totally fine and happy.
Suddenly you look up. You heard something. It was an ad on TV for “name any Fast Food Brand”. It was so appealing to your subconscious mind, it took you out of your book just for a few moments.
You look at that juicy flame broiled steak burger. Now you are getting hungry. You start thinking about eating that delicous burger and the FRIES! ooo how good they smell and taste.
You start thinking about what you could eat. What is available right now? O yeah there is a loaf of your favorite bread in the kitchen.
That is the power of food advertising on the television.
But there is more. Something else that makes you eat more than you need.
Other people. Your spouse and your children are constantly asking to eat. The kitchen is right there with all kinds of foods. And what do you buy? Your Favorites! Now I am not telling you to not eat or never buy your favorites.
Just reminding you of why it is soo easy to eat more than you need. Why it is a battle to lose weight after 10 years of living like this every night. It is not easy to beat the cravings.
I will tell you not watching television ads is a big help. Try watching movies instead. For $8 a month you can have endless viewing all night long without any commercials. This was a huge help to me personally.
Also concerning the family members who want to eat all night long. Try having a specific snack time a couple hours after dinner.
Then it is kitchen closed time for the night except for healthy snacks like fruits and veggies only. Make it a game of finding new healthy recipes for snacks. Find some great ones. Everyone will be happy and healthier.
